Hurricane Supply Kit Checklist

Tropical Storm Alex is moving over the western Gulf of Mexico, and it looks like the biggest U.S. impact will be in Texas although there is also legitimate concern over how the wave action might impact the Deep Water Horizon spill.

But let’s not forget the big picture.  The El Niño in the Pacific has already faded and the Atlantic sea surface temperatures from Africa to Central America are much warmer than normal, leading forecasters to tell us that this will likely be an extremely active hurricane season in the Atlantic.

So if you make a trip to a home supply store in preparation for the upcoming 4th of July weekend, I think that it would be a very good idea to take your hurricane supply kit checklist with you in case you need to add any preparedness items.  Local 10 has a very good checklist in its 2010 Hurricane Survival Guide found on www.JustNews.com.

  1. Mr. Mayfield, I am so glad to see you have a blog. I trust your opinion very much.

I have an odd question. I think it could possibly be important.
Is there a possibility of the high levels of methane and other gasses being released by the Deepwater Horizon spill, having any effect on a passing storm? Could they affect the strength, or path that a storm would take? Is the possible affects being considered by meteorologist?

Thank you so much for your blog.

  2. Mr. Mayfield, a few weeks ago on one of your Friday night hurricane preparedness shows, you recommended an outside antenna for the portable digital TV in addition to the TV’s antenna. It was very small and you said to put it on the roof or outside somewhere for better reception. What type of antenna was it and where can it be purchased? I have a small digital Haier. Best Buy did not have anything like what you had demonstrated.

I watched your show tonight and it was most helpful and informative. I have enjoyed listening to you for years. Thank you very much.
