Three Atlantic Hurricanes at Same Time!

NOAA GOES image from 1:15 pm EDT September 16, 2010

The GOES image above shows Category 1 Hurricane Karl over the Bay of Campeche, Category 4 Hurricane Igor centered 430 miles east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, and Category 2 Hurricane Julia centered about 1050 miles west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands.  Three hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin at the same time is another rare event.  The historical record from the National Hurricane Center that goes back to 1851 shows only eight other years with three or more hurricanes at the same time:  1893, 1926, 1950, 1961, 1967, 1980, 1995 and 1998.

Thanks to NHC’s Chris Landsea and Dennis Feltgen for checking the historical records.
